Visit Braga

Braga is a Portuguese city located in the north of Portugal, in the Minho. It is the seat of a municipality with 183.4 km ² of area, a population of 192 494 inhabitants.
Braga has a bi-millennial history that began in Ancient Rome when it was founded in 16 BC as Bracara Augusta in honor of the Roman Emperor Augustus.
In popular slang is known as "The Youth City", which despite being the oldest city in Portugal is simultaneously a city filled by many young people and a young spirit, coming to be distinguished as the youngest city in Europe.
The "Portuguese Rome": in the 16th century Archbishop Diogo de Sousa, influenced by his visit to the city of Rome, draws a new city where squares and churches abound as in Rome.
The "Baroque City": during the eighteenth century the architect André Soares transformed the city of Braga into the Ex-Libris of the Baroque in Portugal.
The "City of Archbishops", for centuries his Archbishop was the most important in the Iberian Peninsula; He is still holder of the title of Primate of the Spaniards.
The "Roman City" that in the time of the Romans was the largest and most important city located in the territory where it would be Portugal.
The "Capital of Minho" or the "Heart of Minho", because it is located in the center of this province.
The "City of the Three Sacro-Montes" are sanctuaries located southeast of the city in a mountain chain, and are on the order East to South: Bom Jesus, Sameiro and Falperra (Sta. Maria Magdalena and Sta. Marta das Cortiças).

Small Historical Review

The vestiges of the human presence in the region come from thousands of years, as evidenced by several findings. One of the oldest is the Mamoa de Lamas, a megalithic monument built in the Neolithic period. However, one can only prove the existence of population clusters in Braga in the Bronze Age. They are characterized by fossas and ceramics found in Alto de Cividade, where there would be a settlement and a necropolis that would have existed in the Granjinhos area.
In the Iron Age, the so-called "castros" were developed. These were typical of settlements that occupied high places of relief. The Celts were its inhabitants and in this particular region inhabited the Brácaros (in Latin: Bracari), that would give name to the city, after its foundation and the Romans to have forced the populations to descend to the valley.
During the second century BCE, the region was taken over by the Romans. Braga was built in 16 BC, with the designation of Bracara Augusta, in honor of the Roman emperor Augustus (27 BC-14 AD). The city would become capital of the province of Galécia and would integrate the three convents of the peninsular Northwest and part of the Convent of Clúnia, with a population of approximately 285 000 tributaries free in the 24 civility in year 25.
The bishopric of Bracara Augusta, according to legend, was the first bishop from Brabant between 45 and 60, ordained by the apostle Santiago Maior who would have come from the Holy Land and was martyred when converting adherent peoples to the Roman religion in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. But it was only in the year 385 that Pope Siryus refers to the metropolitan of Bracara Augusta.
After the Fall of the Roman Empire of the West, Bracara Augusta became the political and intellectual capital of the Suevo Kingdom. By order of King Ariamiro the council of Braga was held, from May 1, 561 to 563, and was presided over by Saint Martin of Dume, titular bishop of Bracara. From this council resulted great reforms, mainly in the ecclesiastical and linguistic world, standing out the creation of the ritual bracarense and the abolition of pagan linguistic elements.
Later, with the decline of the Suevo people (the ancient Kingdom of Galicia), it was dominated by the Visigothic Kingdom for more than three centuries.
In 715, the Moors reach and take Braga.
In 868, with the King of Asturias Afonso III, the process of Christian reconquest gains new impetus and the city of Braga is integrated for some years in the Kingdom of Asturias, such as Oporto and later - in 878 - Coimbra.
In the XI century the city is reorganized, probably with the new designation of "Braga". The construction of the city wall and the Sé, by order of the bishop D. Pedro de Braga, began on the remains of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Isis, who would later have been converted into a Christian church. The city develops around the Sé, being restricted to the walled perimeter. Braga was then offered as a dowry, by Alfonso VI of Leon and Castile, to his daughter D. Teresa, in his marriage to D. Henrique de Burggonha. These last were lords of the city between 1096 to 1112. In 1112, donate the city to the Archbishops. With the elevation of the bishopric bracarense to archbishopric, the city regains an enormous importance in Iberian level.
Under the reign of D. Dinis (r. 1279-1325), the city wall is requalified, the keep is still built. Later, nine towers, with a quadrangular plan, were added to the existing wall, and the Castle of Braga was also concluded around the existing keep. In the 16th century, the Archbishop of Braga D. Diogo de Sousa modified the city profoundly, introducing streets, squares, new buildings, also causing him to grow beyond the walled perimeter. From the 16th to the 18th centuries, through several archbishops, the buildings of medieval design are being erased and replaced by buildings of religious architecture of the time.
In the 18th century, Braga through the artistic inspiration of André Soares became the Ex Libris of the Baroque in Portugal. At the end of this century, the Neoclassical with Carlos Amarante appears in several buildings. Again, through various archbishops, the religious buildings are again altered with the introduction of the Baroque and the Neoclassical.
In the next hundred years, conflicts erupt due to French invasions and liberal struggles. On March 20, 1809 the city is the scene of the Battle of Carvalho d'Este and victim of various looting by the Napoleonic troops. The city was to be reoccupied on April 5. In 1834, with the end of the liberal struggles, several religious orders of Braga are expelled, leaving their booty for the city. As a result of the Maria da Fonte Revolt in Póvoa de Lanhoso, an area under the jurisdiction of the military barracks in Bra- ca, the city is the scene of important clashes between the people and the authorities. At the end of the 19th century, the center of the city leaves the Sé area of Braga and passes to Central Avenue. In 1875, the line and station of the trains of Braga is inaugurated by king D. Luis.

Geography of the County

Located in the heart of Minho, the city of Braga lies in a region of transitions from East to West, between mountains, forests and hills to the great valleys, plains and green fields. Lands built by nature and shaped by man.
Physically it is located between the Douro River and the Minho River. Occupying 183.51 km², and varying between 20 to 572 meters of altitude, the county is quite diverse. The terrain to the North, situated on the left bank of the Cávado River, is semi-flat thanks to the great valley of the Cávado River. The eastern part is characterized by mountains, such as Serra do Carvalho (479m), Serra dos Picos (566m), Monte do Sameiro (572m) and Monte Sta Marta (562m). Between the Serra do Carvalho and Serra dos Picos, the East River is born, forming the Vale d'Este, already to the South of the Serra dos Picos, the plateau of Sobreposta-Pedralva is developed. To the south, as to the west the terrain is a mixture of mountains, hills and medium valleys. The center of the city is located at the top of the hill of Cividade (215m), extending to the Cávado river valley to the north and west, and to the East River valley to the east and south.
The territory of Bra- zense belongs to two hydrographic basins, the catchment area of the Cávado river to the north and the catchment area of the river Ave a Sul. The Cávado river, of medium flow, is the predominant hydrographic element to the North, and there are also several streams that flow in this river. . The territory to the South is marked by the river East and its several tributaries, like the river Veiga, all of small volume. The soil, given that it belongs to the mountainous system of Gerês and its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, is quite rich in water.
The municipality is predominantly urban, mainly around the city. The rural areas that once prevailed, today, are confined to the limits of the county. It should also be noted that the highest hills and mountains are covered by forest patches, despite the urban pressure and forest fires that have taken place in recent years.

Climate

The climate in Braga, due to its location between mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, is typically temperate atlantic. Winters are mild and pluvial, and generally with moderate Southwest winds. The wind can also blow from the North, usually strong, which generally causes a great decrease of the temperature, these winds are designated as Nortadas. In cold years snowfall occurs, with minimum temperatures averaging -3 ° C. The Springs are typically mild, with large openings and gentle winds. Morning breezes occur more frequently, especially at higher altitudes. In the valley of Cávado, at low altitude, it is normal to have morning fog. Of note is the month of May which is quite conducive to thunderstorms due to the warming of the humid air with the arrival of summer. The summers are warm and sunny with gentle winds of East. In the cooler days, spontaneous rainfall can occur spontaneously, these rains are very important for the vegetation of the region, because it replenishes the sheets of water which makes the region rich in vegetation during the whole year, by which it is known as Verde Minho . Autumns are mild and pluvial, usually with moderate winds. Temperature records form -6.3 ° C in 2001 and 41.3 ° C in 1943. As the temperature drops, rainfall increases. There is a greater frequency of fogs, mainly in the valley of the Cávado where the dense morning fogs occur.
