Visit Coimbra

Coimbra is a Portuguese city, capital of the municipality and district of Coimbra, located in the province of Beira Litoral.
Coimbra is a historically university city, because of the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest in Europe and the largest in Portugal, founded in 1290. One of the oldest cities in the country, was the capital of Portugal before Lisbon, until 1255.
The two banks of Coimbra are bordered by the Mondego River, coming from the Serra da Estrela, in the East-West direction, being the seat of a municipality with 319.4 km² and 143 396 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 31 parishes. This is bordered to the north by the municipality of Mealhada, to the east by Penacova, Vila Nova de Poiares and Miranda do Corvo, to the south by Condeixa-a-Nova, to the west by Montemor-o-Velho and to the northwest by Cantanhede.
The municipal holiday takes place on July 4, in memory of Queen Santa Isabel of Aragon, patron saint of the city popularly known only as the holy queen. It was National Capital of Culture in 2003. On June 22, 2013, the University of Coimbra, Alta and Sofia, were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Short historical review
City of narrow streets, courtyards, staircases and medieval arches, Coimbra was the birthplace of six kings of Portugal, the First Dynasty, as well as the first University of the Country and one of the oldest in Europe.
The Romans called the city, which rose up the hill over the Mondego River, Eminius. Later, with the increase of its importance it became the seat of the Diocese, replacing the Roman city of Conímbriga, whence derived its new name. In 711 the Moors reached the Iberian Peninsula and the city is renamed Kulūmriyya, becoming an important trading post between the Christian North and the Arab South, with a strong Mozarabic community. In 871 becomes County of Coimbra but only in 1064 the city is definitively reconquered by Fernando Magno de Leão.
Coimbra is reborn and becomes the most important city below the Douro River, capital of a vast county governed by the Mozarabic Sesnando. With Condado Portucalense, Count D. Henrique and Queen D. Teresa make it their residence, and it would be in the safety of their walls that would be born the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, which makes it the capital of the county, replacing Guimarães in 1129.
Since the mid-16th century, the history of the city has revolved around the history of the University of Coimbra, and it is only in the 19th century that the city begins to expand beyond its walled hull, which even disappears with the reforms. carried out by the Marquis of Pombal
The first half of the nineteenth century brings difficult times to Coimbra, with the occupation of the city by the troops of Junot and Massena, during the French invasion and, subsequently, the extinction of religious orders. However, the city would regain its lost splendor - in 1856 the first electric telegraph in the city and gas lighting appeared, in 1864 the railway was inaugurated and 11 years later the railway bridge over the Mondego River was born. .
With the University as an unsurpassable reference, student movements arise from a political, cultural and social nature. From the University emerged and are still in full swing today the first Academic Orfeon of Coimbra in 1880, the oldest choir in the country, the Academic Association of Coimbra itself, in 1887, the Academic Tuna of the University of Coimbra in 1888.

Climate
The city of Coimbra has a Mediterranean climate according to the climate classification of Köppen-Geiger. In winter temperatures vary between 15 ° C daytime and 5 ° C in the coldest month, and may be around 0 ° C in cold spells, while in summer temperatures vary between 29 ° C daytime and 16 ° C and may reach 40 ° C. and even overtake. The highest and lowest temperatures recorded in Coimbra in the period 1971-2000 were 41.6 ° C and -4.9 ° C. However, there are records of -7.8 ° C in 1941 and 42.5 ° C in 1943.

Visit the Ventosa Parish Church of Bairro

The Parish Church of Ventosa do Bairro, as we know it today, was partially destroyed by the earthquake of 1755 and restored in later years until 1972, which is the date still indicated today in its main portico, which also contains, since that time, the following Latin inscription: "PULSATE ET APERIETUR VOBIS" ("Knock and it will open for you"). The height of its steeple was also, by that time, increased by a few more meters, as is easily reached from the vestiges still existing there. In the year of 1928 the church underwent substantial alteration, being added the choir to him. In the late 1940s, it was partially damaged again by a lightning bolt on the tower. In the 1950s, the tower benefited from the installation of a clock.
The church has, in its interior, a pulpit of the century. XVIII, constituted in limestone of relevant sculptural beauty, and a baptismal font of the century. XVI, in Renaissance style, decorated with wreaths, cup and foot. And surrounded by stone slabs where you can already see some corrosive marks of time. The oldest image of the church is undoubtedly that of the Virgin and Child, from the 16th century. XV and that of S. Sebastião, already referenced in a document of 1758, whose feast is held every year on the third Sunday in January.

The Church of São Vicente, located in the Parish of Vacariça, should be a construction after 1280, transition from the old Monastery of Vacariça. The church was completely reformulated between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and from this last century several architectural elements are defined, emphasizing the pulpit, of the first half of thousand and seven hundred. This is quite decorated with acanthus leaves and an eagle in the stone basin. From the carvings, mention is made of the rich environment that transpires from the covering of the body of the church, divided with forty eighteenth-century boxes with decorated frames and the clearings painted with scenes of the life of Christ and of Our Lady, but of an artisan character, as well as the retables Of the images they are referenced: the statue of S. The Parish Church of Pampilhosa must belong to the first half of the eighteenth century.
The openings are rectangular, the main door is endowed with frieze and cornice and niche finish that two flaps accompany, in the niche S. Augustine of stone evokes the last patrons. The right side door shows frieze and cornice. The windows of the flanks are square and small, in the wedges are raised thick pinnacles. The main and collateral altarpieces, made of wood, belong to the second half of the eighteenth century, have two columns and marbled painting. A canvas, in that, closes the dressing room and represents the martyrdom of Santa Marinha, being of the following century. The retable of the arch of the left is composed of several carvings of century XVII and XVIII; the one of the right of century XVIII, shows columns and supports in the form of base of Hermes.

The Fonte do Melo, located in the parish of Pampilhosa, was inaugurated in 1925, greatly benefiting the population. In its aspect is a simple font, without style flair.
It is made up only of an arch that has been dug in its entirety, forming a niche, made of cement imitating cork, surmounted by a small coat of arms with the initials CM (City Hall) and a tombstone with the name of "Fonte do Melo" the name of the donor.
In order to bring this water from the Mine to the place of the source in good sanitation, a conduit of sandstone shackles, later in fibro-cement, was built to replace the old discovered gutters that once brought it from the source, irrigate the Quinta do Melo.

Visit the Fountain of Poças - Pampilhosa

The water from the Poças fountain, located in the parish of Pampilhosa, runs to a stone tank, which once served to give drink to the working oxen, which formerly all the farmers of the place possessed. Beside it is a wide poial, where the women who went to the fountain lay the canecos while they waited their turn, and also served to help put them to the head.
The water of this fountain is limestone, so it is not good to drink, but it is abundant, running without interruption either of winter or summer in an inexhaustible source. It has an interesting property: cook the vegetables very well leaving them with a beautiful green color. It is also tradition on earth that it has medicinal properties - which I do not know - but which can be proved by an appropriate analysis. When the last restoration, the Parish Council of Pampilhosa, has alimented the place, ordering a flower bed, which gives a certain beauty to the site making it more captivating and pleasant.
