Visit the Conciliar Seminary of São Pedro and São Paulo - São Lázaro (Braga)

The Conciliar Seminary of St. Peter and St. Paul, located in the Parish of St. Lazarus, is an institution of religious formation for future priests, in charge of the Archdiocese of Braga.
It is housed in the building formerly designated by the College of St. Paul (belonging to the Society of Jesus until its expulsion), and of which the Church of St. Paul is an integral part. The building also houses the Pio XII Museum in the east wing.

The Lake of the Park of St. John of the Bridge, located in the Parish of St. Lazarus, is in the center of this park which is divided into four parts, the outside, the inner part, the Sport Bridge Complex and the Bridge Camping Park. The park is limited to the North by the East River and the Avenue Dr Francisco Pires Gonçalves, to the East and South by the Mount of Picoto and the Avenue of the Stadium, to the West by the Park of Exhibitions of Braga and East River.
The Park was born out of the expropriation in 1911 of Quinta da Mitra, the former palace of the archbishops of Braga.
The outer part of the park, the oldest one, grew around the Chapel of St. John. It is a wooded area with gardens and lakes, has a bandstand, a cruise, a children's park, an open-air auditorium and a monument evocative to 25 April, which celebrates freedom and democracy.
In times past, when the water of the East River was clear, the women of Braga washed their clothes on the bank of the river, where they later extended them on the slope of Mount Picoto.
The interior part is an extension of the exterior, however it is divided from the outside by a railing coming from the old Public Garden that existed in the Central Avenue. This part is characterized by a greater density in vegetation and a large artificial lake.
The old greenhouse, located in this part, was restored and transformed to headquarters of the Municipal Video Library of Braga.

The Church of San Marcos, located in the parish of São Lázaro, dates back to the 16th century. XVIII and was built according to the Carlos Amarante project.
The church has a Baroque style, and in its exterior decoration stand the statues of life-size apostles that mark the rhythm of the upper balustrade. In the middle of the church façade, in a niche, we can see the image of Saint Mark.
D. Diogo de Sousa is buried in the main chapel of the Church, in a tomb of white jasper worked in mosaic.

Visit the Church of Santa Cruz - São Lázaro (Braga)

The Church of Santa Cruz, located in the parish of São Lázaro, was built in the 17th century in Mannerist Baroque style, and has unusual gilded carving inside. The nave is very tall and is formed by a vaulted stone quarry. The interior of the church was the feature of Brother José de Santo António Vilaça. Note the gilded carving of the organ and the pulpits. The exterior is all in stone worked with central symmetry.
The central part of the facade is divided in two registers, with finial in pediment and fins.
On the first level, four Doric columns corrugated with entablature, whose frieze presents, in relief, the instruments of the Passion of Christ, with the figure of the rooster at each end, evoking the denial of Peter.
The cloths are torn by three portals, topped by cartons with the following inscriptions, from left to right.
On the second landing there are four striated Ionic pilasters, with entablature interrupted by a telescope that extends to the pediment. The cloths have ornamental pictures (the sides top windows): in the center, the Santa Cruz with glitter and two crossed masts; on the left side, a fruit tree (the tree of Paradise); on the right side, a palm tree with a royal crown.
Underneath, at the level of the pedestals, three cards with inscriptions of verses of liturgical hymns that the pictures illustrate.
In the pediment, three medallions surround the oculus. The superior has superimposed the stone of arms of D. João VI, placed when this one, 11 of October of 1822, elevated the brotherhood of Santa Cruz to the category of Real. On the sides, the inscriptions refer to the date of 1736. To crown the set, three sculptures: St. Helena supporting the Cross, flanked by two figures in genuflection, armor and mantle, with the scepter and crown at the feet (judges are represented by the Emperor Constantine and D. Afonso Henriques).

The Chapel of St. John of the Bridge, located in the Parish of St. Lazarus, is of longitudinal plan constituted by a porch supported by Tuscan columns, a single nave, a chancel and a sacristy attached. It was built in 1616, underwent several modifications in the following centuries, the last being the placing of a stone altarpiece with the image of the patron, in the first half of the 20th century.

The Chapel of Our Lady of the Tower, located in the Parish of São Lázaro, was built between 1756 and 1759, and is authored by the architect André Soares. At the top of the Santiago tower there is a bell tower and, at its base, an oratory dedicated to Our Lady of the Tower, erected as a way of thanking the city of Braga for having been spared the earthquake of 1755.

The Lúcio Craveiro da Silva Library, located in the parish of São Lázaro, officially opened its doors to the public in 2004. The building was designed by the architect Mário Abreu, in order to preserve and expose the archaeological remains found in the place.
This space has three reading rooms for adults with a capacity of 200 seats, a children's reading room with 65 seats and an autonomous space specially designed for children's activities with 30 seats. A plastic expression room for group activities complements the space for the younger audience.
It also has an auditorium with 160 seats, an exhibition room and a bar with ample space where, in comfortable sofas, you can have your coffee while reading a newspaper, a magazine or a book, complete the equipment for the public.

The Basilica of the Congregados, located in the parish of São Lázaro, was designed by the architect André Soares, built in the 16th century, though only finished in the 20th century.
The building began in 1703 and was blessed on October 27, 1717, although it was necessary to build the towers and place statues in the respective niches of the façade. These works would be carried out as early as the twentieth century.
The façade statues - São Filipe Néri and São Martinho de Dume - were hoisted to their sites on February 16, 1964, and are due to the sculptor Manuel da Silva Nogueira.

The Paço Arquiepiscopal, located in the parish of São João do Souto (Braga), is the palace of the Archbishops of Braga and over the centuries, with the addition of new buildings has resulted in an extraordinary multi-architectural urban complex.
The Medieval Paço de Braga is the oldest building in the complex and faces the Jardim de Santa Bárbara. It is from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It constitutes a sober building with the appearance of a fortification, which stands by the solidity of the regular apparatus of granite blocks, spans of ogival arch windows, surmounted by battlements.
The building includes the facades facing Largo do Paço where the rectory of the University of Minho, including the Noble Hall, is located.
The building facing the town square was erected in the early 18th century, this building was consumed by a fire on April 16, 1866, and was rebuilt during the 1930s.

The Church of São João do Souto is located in the parish of São João do Souto and was built at the end of the 18th century and replaced the original church of the twelfth century.
The current church was built by order of Archbishop D. Gaspar de Bragança and is linked to the Coimbra Chapel.
The chapel has the shape of a quadrangular tower, divided into two distinct spaces
Galilee, with Manueline ornaments and statuary by Hodart; the interior part, authored by João de Rouão, has the traditional high altar and the arms of D. João de Coimbra.
The chapel is covered by a vault of ribs, and the walls have pictures, in tiles, alluding to Genesis.

The Pelicano Fountain, located in the center of Praça do Município in the parish of São João do Souto, is a Mannerist-Joannine style by the sculptor Marceliano de Araújo.
Originally it was in the gardens of Paço Arquiepiscopal Bracarense. Later he spent several years in the Ponte Park, until he was moved to the current location in the time of the presidency of the Chamber of Viriato Nunes. In the square was subject to transformations, raising its center.
