Coruche is home to one of the largest cities of Portugal, with 1113.95 km ² area but only 20 191 inhabitants (2006), divided into eight parishes. The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipalities of Almeirim and Chamusca, northeast of Ponte de Sor, east of Mora, southeast of Arraiolos, the south by Montemor-o-Novo and the secondary portion of Montijo to the west by Benavente and northwest by Salvaterra de Magos.
The parishes are Coruche Biscainho, White Coruche, Bharatpur, Erra, Fajardo, Santana do Mato and St. Joseph Lamar.

Short Historical Review

The county Coruche, one of the most important agricultural centers of the country, consists of two distinct zones: the vast marshlands Sorraia, this tributary of the Tagus nateiros fertilizes its very rich and a forested area, consisting mainly of cork oak forests, the which extracts 10% of the national cork. Part of the agricultural area is formed by known which Garrett Heath sang so well in his "Travels in My Dirt." Appeared here several prehistoric remains as Cabeço Marco, the Source of Cascavel, the estate of terraced and Agolada Azervada and Azervadinha. Equally well documented is the Roman period with the findings of the estates of Mata-Lobos, Mata-Cub, and Peacock Zambaninha, but essentially the Quinta Grande, which are the best and richest of the Roman council estate. The same time would Coruche Castle, which was totally devastated by the Arabs in the year 1180. Two years later it would give the definitive reconquest of the town, believing that since then she has lost all its military importance, which may explain the abandonment of the fortress and consequently its ruin. The year 1182 marks the elevation of the village council, but within the current county Coruche others existed as of Vila Nova da Erra and Lamar. These two would be extinct in 1836, the reform of Mouzinho da Silveira, passing both the category of integrated parish and the current county.
The County has copies of architectural and artistic monuments that form a set of great value. The Antas Weight, Crown Bridge, the Aqueduct of Monte da Barca, the Historical Center of Coruche, buildings with good maps, and the large number of traditional rural houses in the parish of Erra must appear in any script of art. But the temples of worship is that it reaches the highest expression.
