Visiting the Convent of São Jorge de Milreus - Viegas Castle (Coimbra)

The Convent of São Jorge de Milreus, located in the parish of Castelo Viegas, was founded in 1080.

Visit the Church of the Misericordia - Castelo Branco

The Misericórdia Church, located in the Parish of Castelo Branco, is also known as Santo António Church.
An early church was built in the 18th century. XVI by Simão Silva and together with a house that worked as a hospital constituted the Misericordia.
It is the Johannine baroque that marks the physiognomy of the present building, in the sculptural exuberance of the facade confined to the narrow street in which it is located. In the interior, of single nave, stand out the seiscentistas representations of the Visitation and the Espousals of Santa Isabel with San Zacarias, in the altars of the lateral chapels. The main chapel has a baroque altar with gilded carving and a polychrome wood image of San Francisco. On the painted wooden ceiling, we can see a local work representing the center of Pentecost.

Visit the Church and Convent of São Bento - Santa Maria (Bragança)

The Church of São Bento, located in the parish of Santa Maria, Bragança, is part of a convent founded in 1590 by order of D. Maria Teixeira, occupying the houses that belonged to it. Visit the Chapel of Our Lady of Ribeira - Quintanilha

The Chapel of Our Lady of Ribeira, located in the Parish of Quintanilha, was erected in the second quarter of the thirteenth century.
The great structural alterations and, above all, the decorative program of the Chapel of Senhora da Ribeira date back to the first half of the 16th century, when part of the planimetry was altered and a set of murals of high quality were executed. The main altarpiece is already from the sixteenth century.
The chapel, with longitudinal plan, presents main façade in gable, truncated by the arrangement of a double bell, with portal in pointed arch with several archivolts. The side facades have eaves, being torn by portals in a perfect back arc.
The interior space, covered by wooden ceiling decorated with paintings and carved motifs, is divided into three naves of six sections marked by the arrangement of columns and pillars. It has a granite pulpit on the side of the Gospel with the faces engraved in relief. The broken triumphal arch opens to the main chapel, narrower and lower than the body of the church.
The main chapel has in the center the altar with mannerist tabernacle flanked by four columns. In the wall of the tomb and in the murano cloth on the side of the gospel were discovered in 1978-1979 the fifteenth panels of mural painting on the Marian and Christological themes.

Visit the Misericórdia Church - Santa Maria da Feira (Beja)

The Church of the Misericórdia de Beja, located in the parish of Santa Maria da Feira (Beja), is an emblematic and beautiful example of the transition architecture between the Renaissance and the Mannerism in Portugal, full of understanding of the sources of tratadistics and forms learned from the Italian mannerist lesson.
The building is developed in longitudinal plant composed by the volumes of the galilee, the main chapel and the dependencies.
The facade is composed of the sumptuous effect of the galilee, loggia of rusticado device inspired "in the engraving of Serlio that reproduced the average floor of the amphitheater of Verona". The Mannerist arcades are deeply marked in their verticality, creating a set of ribs supported in Corinthian columns, of clear classic taste. In the wall, preceded by stairs, wall and railing, the portal of the temple opens, with pediment of classic lines very purified. The body of the church, installed in the space that originally corresponded to the third section of the loggia, lost part of the original decorative program, possibly due to the undue uses that the space had from the first half of the nineteenth century. From its primitive integrated patrimony there remain the pulpit and four tablets with scenes of the life of Christ belonging to the altarpiece, executed in 1564 by the eborense painter António Nogueira, who are in the Regional Museum of Beja.

Visit the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption - Boats

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, located in the Town of boats, is a medieval temple architecture, Mannerist and Baroque. Inside the nave, is preserved and the choir in two arcosolium pointed arch, which houses the tombs particular, a pulpit square, with its canopy, in Mannerist style, wood with inlays of brass, wicker door access line at side of the Gospel. The triumphal arch, perfect round, the pulley is completely covered in baroque style that extends the national structure of the side altars, plant, and a straight shaft, uncharacteristic of structure, but showing an early Mannerist treatment with ribbed trim at the table, and have been refurbished to adapt to the structure of which involved carving the triumphal arch.

The altarpiece of the high altar, in gold leaf, plant, and a hollow shaft, is a fine example of Baroque national database preserving the primitive granite. Visit the Church of Mercy - St. Mary Major (Chaves)

The Church of Mercy, located in the Parish of St. Mary Major (Chaves) was installed in 1580. However, his church was only built in the second half of the seventeenth century and is marked by an exuberant Baroque aesthetic and harmonious.
Access to the church of Mercy is performed by a wide staircase. Proportionality and harmony underscore the facade of this temple in the second half of the seventeenth century, adopting a refined baroque grammar.
The wedges are marked in front by pilasters and granite capitelizadas. The ground floor is open for three arched openings of the grid, which provide a starting gate. Addorsed its pillars are four spiral columns of Corinthian capitals and based on pedestals decorated scheme that is repeated on the upper floor and on an entablature noted, three bay windows flanking and right spar with balustrade. The strong cornice is marked by massive pinnacles and bulging in the middle of which stands a crown flanked by fins and scrolls surrounding a central niche with a bas-relief commemorating the glorification of Mercy, curved pediment surmounted by stopped and topped by a Latin cross.
Above the lobby is located in the choir. The church body is a single nave, with its valued walls with tile flooring of the eighteenth century, drawing outlined architectures that fall episodes of the Old and New Testament. The roof of the church is painted with a Visitation, composition performed in 1743 by the painter Jerome Braga da Rocha.
The chancel presents a grand and gilded altarpiece, baroque composition of the eighteenth century, while the vestry has some quality paintings, including a table of the seventeenth century and allusive to Purgatory.

Visit the Fort St. Neutel - Santa Maria Maggiore (Chaves)

The Fort of São Neutel, located in the Parish of St. Mary Major (Keys).
His works have been initiated in the context of the Restoration War between 1664 and 1668, when it proceeded with the petrification of the Trinity High stakes and construction of the fort.

Visit the Monastery of San Salvador - Grijó

The Monastery of San Salvador, located in the Town of Grijó, was founded in the year 922 and was expanded in the late eleventh century. Over time, this old monastery of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine had undergone substantial changes in its architectural profile.
Its facade is modest, consisting of a porch with three round arches based on pilasters, surmounted by niches containing sculptures stony S. Peter and St. Paul, with a facade topped by a pediment. At the base of the front develops a feature of mannerist balcony, while the left side rises, separated from the body of the facade, a disproportionate bell tower.
The interior has a Latin cross plan and the body of a single nave, covered by a vault reinforced by arches authors/cre- ators. Before the ship a hall decorated with tiles enxaquetados, from the chapter room manufacturing sixteenth century. The craft shows six side chapels, which are part of the stage setting compositions gilded baroque altarpiece.
The transept, separated from the nave by a railing in black wood, is covered by a ribbed vault and has two balanced Mannerist carved altarpieces. The bow of the cruise has a niche housing a statue of Christ the Savior and the Pelican, a symbol of selflessness.
The chancel was completed in 1626 and is covered by decorated with coffered barrel vault. The walls are covered with carpet tiles, with a standard seventeenth-century baroque. In the background it must be constituted by the soft huge gilded reredos Johannine, which was added in 1795 monumental canvas of Peter of Alexandria. Ostentatious baroque stalls eighteenth century paneled in black wood is complemented by several hagiographic paintings, works of authorship D. Diogo - canon of this Augustinian monastery.
The sacristy is covered with paneled ceiling and shows its walls covered with ornamental carpets century tiles.
Something disproportionate are the galleries of the cloister of the sixteenth century, due to the greater height of the top. The two floors are the rhythmic elegance of an Ionic colonnade, while the central space of the cloister is marked by a fountain Mannerist. The exterior of the upper galleries is lined with tile panels with pictures of the seventeenth century hagiographic, which can break the austere simplicity of the lines of the mannerist cloister.
The northern gallery of the cloister has a small arcosolium housing the magnificent tomb of Queen Rodrigo Sanchez, son of D. Sancho and Mary Pais Ribeira - infant who died in combat in the year 1245, this monastery nearby. Poorly preserved, his coffin is a beautiful work of Romanesque sculpture, made ​​of white limestone Ançã in themiddle of thirteenth century.
