Visit the mountain bike course of the Municipality of Bragança

The mountain bike route of the Municipality of Bragança begins in the city of Bragança, in the historical center, next to the Castle. From where you can see the Serra de Montesinho, where it follows the percuros. The entrance to the Natural Park is soon in Gimonde at 6km.
In Quintanilha is the Apples River, bordered by Spain. This is an area full of old water mills and water mills. Continuing along the route to the north, one arrives at the village of Rio de Onor, one of the last transmontanese community villages. In this border village, goods are still shared within the community, such as the community oven, cattle or even land. The crossing of the River Onor is through a Roman Bridge, after which it continues south towards the villages of Varge and Aveleda. Again next to the border, we can see what remains of the Mineiro de Portelo Complex, now inactive. A few kilometers later you come to the village of Montesinho.
Subsequently, it goes to the Serra Serrada dam, one of the highest points of the course, circling the 1300 meter altitude.
Further south, in the village of Portela you can visit the Interpretive Center of Nature and get to know the fauna and flora of the region better. In the next 28 km you descend almost 1000 meters of unevenness, but in the next 26 km you will climb them again, arriving at the Sanctuary of Mrs. da Serra in the middle of Serra da Nogueira. This will probably be the most demanding part of the route, but the view is well worth it.
You reach Izeda, the southernmost point of the route. On leaving this village you will pass a remarkable olive grove, in the direction of Coelhoso, where you can contemplate another Mining Complex: Minas de Ribeira, with particular interest in the bridge that was used by the miners to reach Outeiro. After passing through Grijó de Parada, Freixedelo and Alfaião, one arrives again at Bragança, with about 255 km elapsed.

Visit the Natural Park of Montesinho

The Natural Park of Montesinho is located in Trás-os-montes, abragendo the Municipality of Bragança, and the one of Vinhais. It has about 75 thousand hectares. Temperatures range between -12 ° C and 40 ° C.
It has a heterogeneous relief, with plateaus cut by deep valleys, as well as some mountain ranges, of which stands out the Serra de Montesinho, in the county of Bragança. The altitudes vary between the 1486 meters, in the Mountain range of Montesinho and the 438 meters in the bed of the river Mente.
Shales are the dominant rocks, but granites, ultrabasic rocks and small calcareous stains can still be found.
The Natural Park of Montesinho is crossed by some of the most important water courses of the river basin of the Douro River.
In the area of Bragança, there are the rivers Sabor, Maçãs and Baceiro. Sabor is born on the border with Spain, on the summits of the Sierra de Montesinho, passing a short distance from Bragança. The Apples is born in Spain, and makes the international border in two distinct stretches. Baceiro is also born in Spain, being the smallest of the main rivers, in its route there is an important nursery of trout.
There is a great diversity of fauna and flora in the Natural Park. The heaths, steels and giests, commonly called matos, occupy vast territories of abandoned soils for agriculture, borders of forests or lands once occupied by an autochthonous forest. The matos, and particularly those occurring at higher altitudes, are biotopes of extreme importance for several species of wild fauna. Lameiros, also known as meadows or mountain pastures, are associated with most of the riverine areas. Chestnut groats represent the majority of agricultural land. Holm oak forests, known as Sardinian forests, occur in the lower areas. Finally, oak-negral forests are one of the main types of native tree vegetation that occurs in the Park as part of a continuum that extends south to the Nogueira mountain range.
The Natural Park of Montesinho has about two hundred and fifty species of vertebrates and a high wealth and diversity also of invertebrates.
The presence of the Iberian wolf, the deer, the water mole, the wild cat, the big horseshoe bat and the mouse-de-lameiros stands out. There are about 160 species of birds, including the royal eagle and the black stork.

Visit Bragança

Bragança is a Portuguese city, capital of the District of Bragança, in the region of Trás-os-Montes, in the Northeast of Portugal, with 21 853 inhabitants in the urban perimeter. It is the eighth largest Portuguese municipality, with 1 173.57 km² of area, 35 341 inhabitants (2011) and 48 parishes.
The municipality is limited to the north and east by Spain, the southeast by the municipality of Vimioso, the southwest by Macedo de Cavaleiros and the west by Vinhais.
The Celts baptized the city, founded in the second century BC, with the name of Brigance, which became Latinized until it became "Bragança".

Short historical review

The archaeological findings made allow us to conclude that the human occupation in Bragança dates back to the final Paleolithic period. However, in the Neolithic period, with the emergence of food producing communities, the domestication of some animal species and the appearance of well-documented forms of worship, an increase of settlements and communities has been observed. From the human occupation in these periods there are several vestiges, some of which are part of the collection in the Abade de Baçal Museum, namely varied pottery, polished stone axes, loom weights, arrowheads and, afterwards, bead axes, halberds , bracelets, fibulas and, still, several artifacts in polished stone. Part of this estate was found in religious-funeral contexts, as is the case of Donai's mammoth, which has been destroyed. However, it is still possible to find several examples of megalithic monuments.

It is thought that the proto-historical communities will have arisen in greater numbers in the Cold Land Transmontana, probably of the end of the Bronze Age (1000-700 a.C.). These settlements-castros-were generally fortified urban structures, sometimes with several wall lines, and were situated in high places and with good reach of the surrounding landscape, which facilitated their defense. The communities practiced a subsistence economy.
The Roman colonization, which was imposed very slowly, was to act on existing civilizations, helping to alleviate the ethnic and cultural differences resulting from the primitive settlements and to homogenize indigenous cultures. The changes made were profound, including in the mountainous areas, which were therefore less accessible, affecting landscapes and ways of living. The Roman presence contributed, in part, to the shift from the regime of collective exploitation of soils to that of private property and, most likely, to a retreat from the forest. The Romans are also responsible for significant administrative, material and cultural changes. There are numerous archaeological remains. The vestiges of the Roman presence have appeared a little throughout the county (Alfaião, Aveleda, Carrazedo, Castro de Avelãs, Donai, France, Gostei, Meixedo, Pinela, Quintela Lampaças, etc.). Indeed, in the place where the city of Bragança stands today, there have been some Roman vestiges, such as tiles and some coins, one of which in bronze, found in several excavations, as in the works of the Church of S. Francisco.
The first references to a village (pagus), the toponymic ancestor of Bragança, appear in the minutes of the Council of Lugo (569 AD) under the name of Vergancia. Later, already in the administrative division of Wamba (666 AD) already a reference to Bregancia appears.
The origins of Bragança, as a region, may be attributed to the tenth or eleventh century. The origins of the settlement are more dubious - as indeed happens in the case of other cities. Everything seems to indicate that in the place where the city rises there would have been a castro, eventually Romanized, that could be the origin of the town. Only the realization of archaeological surveys may provide details that allow to date with greater certainty the origin of Bragança.
The strategic importance of Bragança, especially at the military level and the control of the traffic routes, resulting in a great part of its location, allows to contextualize and to perceive the administrative measures instituted by the monarchs, especially during the first two dynasties, and aimed at guaranteeing a minimum of operation of the square. D. Sancho granted a forum letter in June 1187, which would be successively renewed by D. Afonso III in May 1253 and later by D. Manuel on November 11, 1514.
In the middle of the thirteenth century Bragança already has four parishes: Santa Maria (in the "village"), São Tiago (also in the intramuros and today already disappeared, probably located in the current pelourinho), São João of the present Civil Government, in the place of implantation of the building today belongs of the Camera) and São Vicente.
In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries the demographic growth is already more visible, especially in the extramuros. In the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries there is a greater dynamism and urban growth - obviously a result of the economic, political and military conjuncture - evident in the construction and / or remodeling of all churches, convents and houses emblazoned. The urban area of the city in the early twentieth century was almost coincident with that which existed in the late sixties, except for one peripheral artery or other, then at the beginning of urbanization. In the numbering of 1530, Bragança, counted on about 2000 inhabitants, being the greater agglomerate of Trás-os-Montes. At the end of the Philippine rule, because of the little strategic importance it was granted, it had 2,400 inhabitants and by the middle of the eighteenth century the population was around 3,500 people and was already assumed as the capital of the province.
Until the middle of the 20th century, the Transmontano Northeast will remain under a demographic regime with predominant characteristics of the Old Regime. The processes of stagnation or even of retrocession install themselves.

The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, located in the parish of Tenões, is dedicated to Senhor Bom Jesus and is constituted by an architectural-landscaped set composed by a church, the staircase where the Via Sacra do Bom Jesus is developed, a garden area Bom Jesus, some hotels and a funicular.
His peculiar disposition was the inspiration for other constructions, such as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies in Lamego and the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos in the city of Congonhas in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
It is classified as Property of Public Interest.
It is believed that the primitive occupation of this site dates back to the beginning of the 14th century when someone will have erected a cross on the top of Mount Espinho. In the year 1373 a hermitage is already mentioned in the place, under the invocation of the Holy Cross. This hermitage will have been attached to the parish of Tenões.
Local of devotion and pilgrimage of the people of the region of Braga, in 1494 was erguida a second hermitage. A third hermitage was erected in 1522.
In 1629 a group of devotees constituted the Confraternity of Bom Jesus do Monte, being built a chapel where was placed an image of Christ Crucified, besides houses for shelter of the pilgrims, and the first chapels of Passos of the Passion, in the form of small niches.
From 1722, the then Archbishop of Braga, D. Rodrigo de Moura Teles, conceived and initiated a great project that would lead to the present Sanctuary.
This church was designed by the architect Carlos Amarante, by order of the then Archbishop of Braga, D. Gaspar de Bragança, to replace the previous one, erected by D. Rodrigo de Moura Teles. His works began on June 1, 1784, and were completed in 1811.
The churchyard, also designed by Amarante, features eight statues representing characters who intervened in the condemnation, passion and death of Christ.
The church has a plant in the shape of a Latin cross, constituting one of the first neoclassical buildings in the country. Its façade is flanked by two towers, surmounted by a triangular pediment.

From the year 1877, a commission headed by António Brandão Pereira will draw up a first plan for the construction of a park and a lake.
Hence the existence of the lake, enlarged in 1908, extending southwards along cliffs from which flows the water to the lake.
Throughout the park, and in the shade of old and leafy trees, we found tables and benches for picnics.

Visit the Church of Santa Eulália - Tenões (Braga)

The Church of Santa Eulália, located in the parish of Tenões, stands out as an example, in constructive terms, of the simpler typology of the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic in the north of Portugal. This church of modest dimensions, is composed internally by a nave of rectangular plant and a chancel, also rectangular, but of smaller dimensions.
In spite of later alterations are still visible the signs of the transition to the Gothic like the broken arch of the portal.
It is classified as Property of Public Interest.

Visit the Funicular of the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus - Tenões (Braga)

Bom Jesus Funicular is located in Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary, in the parish of Tenões, connects the upper part of the city to the Sanctuary, overcoming a drop of more than one hundred meters in height, and follows a path parallel to that of the Staircase of the Good Jesus.
It was the first funicular railway built in the Iberian Peninsula, and is currently the oldest in service in the world using the water balance system.
It was built to replace the Braga line of Americans, which originally extended to the sanctuary and had to have its horse-traction supplemented by steers on the steep ascent on days of greater affluence.
It operates on a ramp, consisting of two independent cabins, connected to each other by a funicular system with water balance. Each cabin has a tank, which is full of water when at the upper level, and emptied when at the bottom. The weight difference thus obtained allows the movement. The amount of water is calculated according to the number of passengers in the cabins, with each trip.
It was inaugurated the 25 of March of 1882.

Visit the Staircase of the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus - Tenões (Braga)

The Bom Jesus staircase, located in the Parish of Tenões, which runs from the Portico to the Terreiro de Moisés, has a difference of 116 meters, with 573 steps in granite and is divided into three Stairs: The Portico Staircase with 376 steps, O Staircase of the Five Senses with 104 steps and Staircase of the Three Virtues with 93 steps.
In the portico is born a majestic staircase, built on the initiative of D. Rodrigo de Moura Teles, divided by several flights with levels. The pavement is of small stone, crushed between carved stonework, with steps in front of the chapels. The parapets headed in stonework are ornamented at the angles with armillary spheres or pyramids.
