Brief Historical Summary
The origin of Vila Nova de Gaia probably dates back to a Celtic castro. During the Roman Empire, took the name or Cale Gale. This name is most likely of Celtic origin, a development of "Gall," with which the Celts referred to themselves (other examples can be found in "Galicia", "Gaul", "Galway"). After the conquest and pacification of the territories south of the Douro, around 1035, with the exodus and expulsion of Muslim populations, leaving fertile land abandoned, the settlers established themselves again in Gaia, in exchange for better contracts feudal, with the new lords of the conquered lands. This new population refounded the ancient city of Cale with the name of Gaia and around the castle ruins of the old "Gaia. "
