Visit the Church of Saint John the Baptist - Rio de Onor

The Church of St. John the Baptist, located in the Parish of Rio de Onor, is a 16th century building. The triangular pediment is truncated by the double bell and topped by a clock and cross.
This church is similar, on the outside, to its neighboring Church of Rihonor de Castilla, located about 500 meters. This similarity confirms the fact that these two villages are considered as one, in such a way that it is customary to designate Rio de Onor de Cima (the Spanish part) and Rio de Onor de Baixo (the Portuguese part)

Visit the Typical Village of Rio de Onor

The village of Rio de Onor is inserted in the Natural Park of Montesinho being crossed by the border with Spain. On one side, Rio de Onor, on the other, Rihonor de Castilla. This community village is one of the best preserved of the Natural Park of Montesinho, with typical houses shale serranas in porch with balconies porches, very well recovered. The raian village is crossed by the river Onor, also known as Contensa river, and its river beach invites moments of rest, next to the clear waters of the river!
In Rio de Onor, discover the Roman Bridge, the Mother Church, the oven, the forge and the community mills.
The typical handicraft of the village includes pieces of basketry and carpentry and in the gastronomy the tasty sausages stand out. Of the ancestor traditions of Rio de Onor, mention should be made of the "rionorês", a dialect that was born from the mixture of Castilian and Portuguese and which is still spoken today in the village; and the Feast of the Kings (January 6), a rite of puberty in which single boys participate.

Guadramil is a typical Transmontana village located in the parish of Rio de Onor.
It is a communal village in the Natural Park of Montesinho, which maintains the houses of typical moth and a dialect almost extinct called Guadramilês.
It borders two Spanish villages, Riomanzanas and Santa Cruz de Los Cuerragos and with three Portuguese villages: Rio de Onor, Deilão and Petisqueira.
The relief is quite uneven. Wildlife consists mainly of corsos, wild boars, foxes, rabbits, hares, wolves, partridges, blackbirds, starlings, goldfinches, lizards and snakes.
This village was for many years a communal village, where its inhabitants divided the mill, the forge, the herd and some agricultural tasks. At present, it is inhabited by about thirty people

The Pelourinho de Rebordãos located in the place of Pelourinho, in the parish of Rebordãos, was built in the Middle Ages.
The steps, primitively in shale, were redone in granite. The shaft, decorated with hemispheres, is octagonal and supports a cubically shaped capital with slightly concave edges. A small pyramid can be seen above the capital.
This Pelourinho is classified as Property of Public Interest.

Visit the Castle of Tourão - Rebordãos

The Castle of Tourão, located in the Parish of Rebordãos, is located in a small spire in spur, in the hillside and in the northeast limit of the mountain range of the Nogueira. The first occupation of the place will have been a small fortified settlement, of the Final Bronze or Iron Age, of which there are scarce vestiges.
The second phase of occupation corresponds to the construction of a small medieval rock castle, whose occupation extends to the modern era. From this rocky castle there are still evident traces of structures, which, though heavily overturned, are still preserved in the foundations and some walls of considerable dimensions.

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is a fairly large and sober-looking church with a typically "bragancy" taste: in the frontier bison there is only a simple and smooth round arched porch (now almost overcome by technical difficulties in its execution ), contrasting the more or less robust staves with the remaining apparatus, small and irregular (in the shale or local gap); to the top, the invariable double-bell tower. Flanking this temple stands out a battered, sunlit house, with beautiful windows framed in a baroque and seventeenth-century taste.

Visit the Chapel of Our Lady of Ribeira - Quintanilha

The Chapel of Our Lady of Ribeira, located in the Parish of Quintanilha, was erected in the second quarter of the thirteenth century.
The great structural alterations and, above all, the decorative program of the Chapel of Senhora da Ribeira date back to the first half of the 16th century, when part of the planimetry was altered and a set of murals of high quality were executed. The main altarpiece is already from the sixteenth century.
The chapel, with longitudinal plan, presents main façade in gable, truncated by the arrangement of a double bell, with portal in pointed arch with several archivolts. The side facades have eaves, being torn by portals in a perfect back arc.
The interior space, covered by wooden ceiling decorated with paintings and carved motifs, is divided into three naves of six sections marked by the arrangement of columns and pillars. It has a granite pulpit on the side of the Gospel with the faces engraved in relief. The broken triumphal arch opens to the main chapel, narrower and lower than the body of the church.
The main chapel has in the center the altar with mannerist tabernacle flanked by four columns. In the wall of the tomb and in the murano cloth on the side of the gospel were discovered in 1978-1979 the fifteenth panels of mural painting on the Marian and Christological themes.

Pinela's old communal oven for baking crockery may be more than a century old.
It was for years the local finishing line of the work of the local cantareiras, usually used in a group, where all the artisan production of clay crockery of Pinela, realized by several pots, the pots, vases, pitchers, and other containers were cooked.
It was a real art to do the dishes. Tell the local people that out of this small oven leave a lot of crockery. The pots placed the pitchers and larger pots at the base and from there they filled until they reached the top, placing the smaller pieces inside the larger ones. The dishes came in mixed, each pot had its own mark so there were no confusions in the time to separate the pieces.
It was up to the men to fetch the firewood from the mountain to throw the kiln at very high temperatures. It was customary for the population to gather around the oven while it baked.
The oven is still in good condition and although it is not currently used, it remains a landmark of great importance for the cultural, social and economic identity of the locality.

The Castle of Alfenim, located in the Parish of Pinela was a large fortified settlement located on a quartzite crest that rises to 960 meters of altitude. This location gives you excellent geostrategic control over the surrounding embankment, which includes an extensive planar area. The inner platform presents a plant with an approximately subcircular configuration and is surrounded by a line of wall whose traces are easily detected from a slope and some rocky landslides. Generally, this line surrounds the town in all its extension. A surface survey allowed to collect some ceramic fragments that mark the occupation of this settlement between the Iron Age and the Middle Ages.
