Visit the Botanical Garden of Coimbra - Almedina (Coimbra)

The Coimbra Botanical Garden, located in the Parish of Almedina, extends over 13.5 hectares on land donated by the Benedictine friars. The garden was created to complement the study of Natural History and Medicine at the University of Coimbra. Marquis of Pombal was the great driver of its construction in 1773.
Spread over several levels, staircases and avenues, it is one of the most renowned botanical gardens in the world, allowing a trip to the four corners of the earth, due to the diversity of plants it has.
The forest occupies two thirds of the total garden area and is mainly composed of free-growing exotic trees and bamboo.

Visiting the Solar dos Viscondes de Portalegre - Castelo Branco

The Solar dos Viscondes de Portalegre, located in the Parish of Castelo Branco, built in 1743, is an old property of the family Coutinho Refoios, now owned by the Municipality
It is a building of markedly Renaissance brands. Its facade presents a symmetrical disposition with respect to the architectural elements. In this set stand out the bay windows, for harmony and visual beauty.

Visit the Garden of the Episcopal Palace - Castelo Branco

The Jardim do Paço Episcopal (or of S. João Baptista), located in the Parish of Castelo Branco, was built by the Bishop of Guarda, D. João de Mendonça, around 1720.
In the garden are the statues of St. John the Baptist and that of Mary Magdalene, dating from 1725.
Adjacent to the Palace is the staircase of the 33-step apostles.
In formal terms, the garden is divided into four different sites, but connected by several points of articulation: the entrance, the floor of the boxwood, the flooded garden and the upper plane.
The current entrance of the garden is practiced by Rua Bartolomeu da Costa, since 1936, the year in which it was designed by the engineer Manuel Tavares dos Santos. The mural panels covered with tiles served as a repository of memories but were never fully filled: ancient views of the city and the portraits of the two bishops who drove the building of the garden were the motives chosen. Jardim do Buxo has a rectangular plan and constitutes the main landing.
It is divided into 24 plots, bordered by hedges and boxwood sidewalks, and has 5 lakes with fountains implanted. In addition, it boasts a high number of statues.
The Alagado Garden, next to the previous one, is located in the South band. It is a set of trapezoidal beds that, illusorily, seems to emerge from the middle of the lake, provoking a surprising visual effect.
Between these two landscaped spaces is the Lake of the Crowns, with three pieces of fountains. The lake rests on a balcony with an elevation above the garden and in it parades the fourth dynasty of the Portuguese monarchs until D. José I, as well as D. Sebastião.

The Cruzeiro de São João is located in Castelo Branco parish. It is next to the City Park and Jardim do Paço.
It was erected in the early 16th century before a church with the same denomination, a temple that was demolished in the early twentieth century.
The Cruzeiro is in granite, of vegetalista decoration, presents / displays a Cross of Christ. At the base, octagonal, human figures were carved, chained, in a possible allusion to temptation.
It is classified as a National Monument.

Hence the existence of the lake, enlarged in 1908, extending southwards along cliffs from which flows the water to the lake.

Throughout the park, and in the shade of old and leafy trees, we found tables and benches for picnics.

The Museum of the Biscainhos, located in the Parish of the Cathedral, is installed in a remarkable patrimonial set composed by property and garden.

The Museum of the Biscainhos has as a programmatic component the illustration of the experience in the Portuguese noble society, in the context of a seigniorial house of the XVII and XVIII centuries.

The building has interiors of great artistic interest, namely, compartments with parietal tile coverings from the 16th century. XVIII and ceilings with paintings and ornamental treatments.

It presents to the public a sequence of spaces that give a view of the occupations, tastes and traditions of our ancestors of the nobility of the XVII and XVIII centuries, being able to visit the Atrium, the Noble Hall, the Showrooms, Oratory, Music, the Dining Room, the Stables and the Old Kitchens. As an obligatory complement of the visit, the baroque gardens unfold in a show of artistic and environmental beauty, defining the formal garden and the old orchard and vegetable garden.
