Visit the Cathedral of Braga - Sé (Braga)

The Cathedral of Braga is located in the parish of the Cathedral and is the seat of the bishopric founded, according to tradition, by St. James the Greater who here left his first disciple, St. Peter of Rates. Due to this apostolic origin it is considered Sacred Primal Basilica of the Iberian Peninsula, and its Archbishop, Primate of the Spain. It has its own liturgy, the Bracaran liturgy.
This is one of the most important Romanesque temples in the country. Here you will find the tombs of Henry of Burgundy, Count of Portugal and his wife, Teresa of Leon, the country of D. Afonso Henriques.
Its better documented history dates back to the work of the first bishop, D. Pedro de Braga, and corresponds to the restoration of the Episcopal See in 1070, which preserves few vestiges.
In 1128 a building of five chapels was begun at the head of the church, on the initiative of Archbishop D. Paio Mendes, partially destroyed by the earthquake of 1135. Respecting the architectural canons of the Benedictine cloneans, the works were directed by Nuno Paio.
In 1268 the works were not yet completed. The building continued to be modified with some artistic interventions, the Galilee being built on the façade by D. Jorge da Costa in the early years of the 16th century and later completed by D. Diogo de Sousa.
In 1688 the whole frontier was modified to the baroque taste, having also executed the zimbório that illuminates the cruise.
It has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.

Visit the Biscainhos Museum - Sé (Braga)

The Museum of the Biscainhos, located in the Parish of the Cathedral, is installed in a remarkable patrimonial set composed by property and garden.
The Museum of the Biscainhos has as a programmatic component the illustration of the experience in the Portuguese noble society, in the context of a seigniorial house of the XVII and XVIII centuries.
The building has interiors of great artistic interest, namely, compartments with parietal tile coverings from the 16th century. XVIII and ceilings with paintings and ornamental treatments.
It presents to the public a sequence of spaces that give a view of the occupations, tastes and traditions of our ancestors of the nobility of the XVII and XVIII centuries, being able to visit the Atrium, the Noble Hall, the Showrooms, Oratory, Music, the Dining Room, the Stables and the Old Kitchens. As an obligatory complement of the visit, the baroque gardens unfold in a show of artistic and environmental beauty, defining the formal garden and the old orchard and vegetable garden.

Visit the Church of Pópulo - Sé (Braga)

The Church of Pópulo is located in the parish of Sé. The invocation comes from the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome and the image-icon that is venerated there. The temple was begun in 1596 by initiative of the then archbishop of Braga, D. Frei Agostinho de Jesus. The construction of the whole ensemble dragged from the sixteenth century to the nineteenth century.
Great part of the building) was reconstructed at the end of century XVIII with project of author Carlos Amarante.
Currently, the premises of the convent are one of the buildings of the Municipality of Braga. Guided tours are promoted, especially for appreciation of tile flooring.

Visit the Paços do Concelho of Braga - Sé (Braga)

The present Paços do Concelho, located in the parish of Sé, are in Renaissance style and were built in the 18th century.
The building, considered by some specialists as one of the most outstanding examples of Baroque architecture in the Iberian Peninsula. The project was authored by the architect André Soares, and his only work is documented in the city. Although its construction began in 1753, it was only completely finished in 1865. It is classified as a Property of Public Interest.

The Cruzeiro das Carvalheiras, located in the Parish of the Cathedral, was built in the seventeenth century.

Visit the Fountain of the Field of the Horts - Sé (Braga)

The Chafariz do Campo das Hortas, located in the Parish of the Cathedral, is a Mannerist style fountain, with pyramidal system slimming in height, with two cups overlapping.

Visit the Arco da Porta Nova - Sé (Braga)

Arco da Porta Nova, located in the parish of Sé, is probably one of the most iconic buildings in the city.
It was commissioned in 1512 by Archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa. Arco da Porta Nova was also the first door, out of a total of 8 existing in the city of Braga, which did not lead to any path. At that time, all other doors led to paths already created in the time of the Romans. The Porta Nova Arch led to a square with a fountain, where we could find a fish market.
The face facing the center of the city contains the figure of Our Lady of Nazareth, already present in the first version of the Arch of Porta Nova, and only one pillar on each side, in an approximation of the baroque influence, in agreement with all the work of André Soares.
The opposite side, facing the (old) exterior of the city, contains the arms of faith of Archbishop D. Gastar and, at the top, the allegorical statue of the city of Braga.

Visit the Monument of the Seven Fountains - São Victor (Braga)

The Seven Fountains, located in the Parish of St. Victor, with its immense stone-clad ducts, where two people can pass simultaneously, with their subterranean pipes, some in depth and others near the surface, with mines and wells, with the six "houses" - once numbered seven - in which they join, treat and decant the waters are an important monument.
For hundreds of years the Seven Fountains were the city's main water supply point.

Visit the Monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus - São Victor (Braga)

The Monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, located in the parish of St. Victor, boasts a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to commemorate the solemn consecration of the city and archdiocese of Braque to the Divine Heart of Christ held on May 16, 1886.
