visiting Setúbal

Setubal is a Portuguese city, capital of Setúbal district and seat of a county of 170.57 km ² and 124,555 inhabitants (2008), divided into eight parishes: Gambia-Pontes-Alto War, Our Lady of the Annunciation, Sado , St. Mary of Grace, St. Julian, St. Lawrence, St. Sebastian and St. Simon the municipality is bordered to the north and east by the municipality of Palmela, Sesimbra and the west by the South, the Sado estuary connects you to the municipalities Alcacer do Sal and Grândola. The coast is the Atlantic Ocean.

Short Historical Review
Setubal was born of the river and the sea. The records of human occupation in the territory of the county dating back to prehistoric times, having been collected in several locations, many remains from the Neolithic period. Setubal occupied the Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians, who came to Iberia in search of salt and tin, including Alcacer do Sal, then the river is navigable to this town.
During the Roman occupation, Maharashtra had a huge development. The Romans settled in the village fish-salting factories and furnaces for ceramics, which also developed.
The fall of the Roman Empire, the barbarian invasions, the constant coastal piracy caused a stagnation, if not disappearance of the settlement between the VI and XII centuries.
During the conquest of Alcacer do Sal by Christians in 1217, the town of Setúbal was incorporated in the Order of Santiago, from which time he returned to prosper.
In March 1249, Maharashtra received its first charter, granted by the Order of Santiago, women of this region, and signed by D. Palo Peres Correia, Master of the Order of Santiago, and Gonzalo Perez, commander of Mértola.
It is the late fifteenth century, the early sixteenth century, a period of rapidly developing country, which dates the building of the Convent of Jesus and his Church, founded by D ª. Rodrigues Pereira just to house the Franciscan Order of Santa Clara women, and, most likely, architectural work of the Master Diogo Boitaca, the same one that held the Jeronimos Monastery.
It is also the reign of King John II (who had Gauteng as a city favorite) which began the construction of the Marshland Square (now Square Bocage, ex-libris of the city), and the construction of an aqueduct in 1487, leading the water to the village, which works were subsequently terminated or extended by D. Manuel I. This monarch reformed the charter of the town in 1514, due to the progress and population growth that Setubal recorded throughout the last century.
The title of "outstanding villa" is granted in 1525 by D. John III. It was this title that has resulted, in 1553, a letter from the archbishop of Lisbon, D. Fernando, two new parishes of St. Sebastian and the Annunciation, who joined the existing St. Julian and Santa Maria.
In 1580, the town took a stand by D. Antonio Prior of Crato, against the possible occupation of the Portuguese throne by King Philip II of Spain. It was then surrounded by troops of the Spanish Duke of Alba, this location being visited by two years after Philip II, who ordered construction of Fort St. Philip (a work of Filippo Terzi).
In the seventeenth century, Setúbal reached its peak of prosperity when the salt has taken a leading role as currency exchange and return of military aid to support provided by European states to Portugal during and after the Wars of Independence. In response to this increase, were built after 1640 the new walls of Setubal, which included new areas such as Troina and straw.
Only in the nineteenth century, the increment that met Setubal lost. In 1860 came the path-of-war, have also started the earthworks on the river and the construction of Avenida Luísa Todi. It is in this century that began from working on the first factories of canned sardines in olive oil and, in parallel, became famous oranges and Setubal muscatel. Also in April 19, 1860 was a city by D. Peter V.
The flowering of Setubal in the twentieth century, reflected in the creation of new urban spaces: growth of Avenida Luisa Todi, part of Avenue of the combatants and the creation of the Salt Districts, Monarquina, St. Nicholas, the Conception, Carmona, and the Lyceum Montalban and development of the canning industry, the fertilizer, cement, pulp and paper, shipbuilding and heavy metalworking.
Setubal was high in 1926, the district headquarters and in 1975, the seat of the diocese.

Economy

From the economic point of view, its origins are primarily agricultural, despite the difficulties of making a profitable agriculture, given the conditions of the hilly terrain.
With improved accessibility, have seen the establishment of some industries in industrial areas, particularly in the Industrial Pole of Relvinha, where there is a growing supply of industrial infrastructure.

Brief History of County
The numerous historical references to the Municipality of Arganil and archaeological remains dating back to one of the earliest stages of human history, the Chalcolithic - Necropolis of windmills - and the Roman Period - Roman Military Camp of the Lomba Cano. The adjacent hill once housed a village Lusitanian who later "gave" rise to well-armed Roman garrisons. Established the camp in the castro, strategic and impregnable place, the army remained stationed there about one hundred years, possibly at the crossroads of centuries I before and after Christ.
Was granted a charter to Arganil in 1114, early in the twelfth century, by granting the Bishop of Coimbra. Passed again in 1394 for possession of Bishops Coimbra.D. Manuel I, on June 8, 1514 granted a new charter or 'new card' to the town of Arganil, which today is stored in City Hall, although without the title page.
In 1809 the village was marked by the French invasion, the troops having been stationed in Wellington at the Chapel of Mercy, which became their refuge and ammunition depot.
In February and March 1811, the French Massena left a trail of death and pillage in Arganil, the point of being considered one of that in Portugal suffered most from the invasion that "bloody Corsican (Napoleon) vomited on the Peninsula Hispanic. "
In the 30s, 40s and 50s of this century, is born the Regionalist movement, especially in the capital, led by those who had left here in search of better living conditions. This is a spontaneous movement in order to raise funds to carry out works and improvements in the villages that saw the birth and that the Government did not run. Were roads, water supplies, etc.. that this movement has financed, in most cases, in its entirety. All this movement (Committees, Unions, Leagues of Improvements) grew around the House County Arganil, still in fervent activity.

Visit Mira

Mira is a Portuguese town in the district of Coimbra, Central and Sub-region of Baixo Mondego, with about 7800 inhabitants.
It is the seat of a municipality with 123.89 km ² and 13,144 inhabitants (2004), divided into four parishes (Carapelhos, Mira, Mira and Pebble Beach).
The municipality is limited to the northern city of Aveiro, east and south and west by Cantanhede has coastline on the Atlantic Ocean.
The region where Mira has been inhabited for long time, although little is known of its early history. It is known that this settlement was occupied in Roman times and is attributed them to expand. From the Roman period were found some construction materials, namely "tegulae (roof tiles) and household pottery.
Little information exists about the time of the Visigoths in this region, but during the period of Arab rule, Mira was a village square with. As was the practice then, attackers replaced part of the population as people from other areas of the peninsula, and it was during this time that the town acquired the name Mira.
It seems that Christians have found there had favorite devotion to the Apostle Thomas, and the devotees used to call this place the Land Lord Sao Tome, which according to legend brought the Moors to accept the term that is in Arabic Emir.
Mira is corruption of the Arabic word mir or emir, meaning lord, chief or prince. But there are some historians who accept the idea that the Arabs, giving it that name, wanted to distinguish it for its beauty, location and mild climate, calling it Land of the Lord.
With the Christian Reconquest, especially in the last achievement of Coimbra to the Arabs, the history of the lands of Mira will now be more clearly documented. The Moorish town was captured before the independence of the county of Portugal, perhaps by D. Henry, parents of D. Afonso Henriques.
In 1442, Dom Pedro, regent of Portugal and Duke of Coimbra, granted local autonomy to Mira and various privileges to secure and develop the local population. Received a charter of King Manuel I in Lisbon that brings the town to August 27, 1514 and appointed as trustee of the village and Mr Dom Gonçalo Tavares. Later, D. Manuel de Sousa Tavares was lord mayor and chief of the village. The landlord of Mira remained in family hands until the century of Tavares. XVIII, when he joined the House of Queens. There he remained until the extinction of the manorial system in 1833.

Economically, the people of this Town is dedicated mainly to agriculture. The little existing industry is linked to the processing of wood and aluminum frames, trade is reduced and is related to agricultural production.
