Are aplenty findings from the Neolithic, the Chalcolithic of Mair, Shepherd and St. Lawrence, among other places, and proto-historic civilizations, including the multiple settlements situated in the hills surrounding the region of Alto Tâmega .
The Roman legions that two millennia ago, conquered the lands they settled mainly in the fertile valley of the Tâmega exactly where now stands the city, and built fortifications around the periphery, taking advantage of some of the existing settlements.
They built walls to protect the cluster population; built the majestic bridge of Trajan, encouraged the use of hot mineral-medicinal waters, deploying Spas; exploited ores, gold-bearing veins and other natural resources. Such was the importance of the urban core, which was elevated to city in 79 AD when Titus Flavius Vespasian dominated the first Caesar of the Flavian family. From this stems the old name Aquae Flaviae the present city of Chaves and his Gentile - flaviense.
The pinnacle of Roman rule there until the beginning of the third century, when the gradual arrival of commonly dubbed barbarians.
They were the Swabians, Visigoths and Alans, from eastern Europe and that ended the Roman colonization. The wars between Remismundo Frumário and, in the race right to the throne resulted in the almost total destruction of the city, and the victory of Frumário Idácio prison, noted Bishop of Chaves. The domain barbaric lasted until the Moors from North Africa, invaded the region and defeated Rodrigo, the last Visigoth king, in the early eighth century.
With the Arabs, Islam also invaded the space occupied by Christianity, which caused a bitter religious dispute and caused the flight of local residents to the mountains to the northwest, with inevitable destruction. The skirmishes between Moors and Christians lasted until the eleventh century. The city began to be recaptured from the Moors in the ninth century, by D. Alfonso, King of Leon that partially rebuilt. However, soon after the first quarter of the tenth century, fell again in the power of the Moors, until the eleventh century, D. Alfonso III, King of Leon rescued, sent to rebuild, people and surrounding walls again, whereas here there was also an important Jewish quarter.
