The Ponsul River is a tributary of the right bank of the Tagus, and rises in the Ramiro Range, at an altitude of 650 m, in the county of Idanha-a-Nova. It is noted as one of the main feeding sites of Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) in the region. This bird, which unlike the white stork is very elusive and rare, even having the status of vulnerable in Portugal, feeds on crustaceans, amphibians and small fish.
The River Ponsul crosses the Municipality of Castelo Branco, and the Parish of Escalos de Baixo where it leaves magnificent landscapes.
