The Furninha Cave, located in the Parish of San Pedro (Peniche), corresponds to a natural cavity, since it is the most important pre-historical county.
It is located beside the sea, this cave formed in limestone of the Lower Jurassic, was occupied between the Middle Paleolithic to the end of the Chalcolithic and was excavated in 1880 by Nery Delgado, one of the great pioneers of geology and archeology Portuguese.
Used for shelter and burial ground, this season prehistoric provided an extensive archaeological, where highlight the varied fauna of the Quaternary that lived there then (like hyenas, deer, boars, bears, etc..) and the findings of human remains, as stone and bone tools (bifaces, arrow heads, polished stone axes).
