Coimbra is a Portuguese city, capital of the municipality and district of Coimbra, located in the province of Beira Litoral.
Coimbra is a historically university city, because of the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest in Europe and the largest in Portugal, founded in 1290. One of the oldest cities in the country, was the capital of Portugal before Lisbon, until 1255.
The two banks of Coimbra are bordered by the Mondego River, coming from the Serra da Estrela, in the East-West direction, being the seat of a municipality with 319.4 km² and 143 396 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 31 parishes. This is bordered to the north by the municipality of Mealhada, to the east by Penacova, Vila Nova de Poiares and Miranda do Corvo, to the south by Condeixa-a-Nova, to the west by Montemor-o-Velho and to the northwest by Cantanhede.
The municipal holiday takes place on July 4, in memory of Queen Santa Isabel of Aragon, patron saint of the city popularly known only as the holy queen. It was National Capital of Culture in 2003. On June 22, 2013, the University of Coimbra, Alta and Sofia, were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Short historical review
City of narrow streets, courtyards, staircases and medieval arches, Coimbra was the birthplace of six kings of Portugal, the First Dynasty, as well as the first University of the Country and one of the oldest in Europe.
The Romans called the city, which rose up the hill over the Mondego River, Eminius. Later, with the increase of its importance it became the seat of the Diocese, replacing the Roman city of Conímbriga, whence derived its new name. In 711 the Moors reached the Iberian Peninsula and the city is renamed Kulūmriyya, becoming an important trading post between the Christian North and the Arab South, with a strong Mozarabic community. In 871 becomes County of Coimbra but only in 1064 the city is definitively reconquered by Fernando Magno de Leão.
Coimbra is reborn and becomes the most important city below the Douro River, capital of a vast county governed by the Mozarabic Sesnando. With Condado Portucalense, Count D. Henrique and Queen D. Teresa make it their residence, and it would be in the safety of their walls that would be born the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, which makes it the capital of the county, replacing Guimarães in 1129.
Since the mid-16th century, the history of the city has revolved around the history of the University of Coimbra, and it is only in the 19th century that the city begins to expand beyond its walled hull, which even disappears with the reforms. carried out by the Marquis of Pombal
The first half of the nineteenth century brings difficult times to Coimbra, with the occupation of the city by the troops of Junot and Massena, during the French invasion and, subsequently, the extinction of religious orders. However, the city would regain its lost splendor - in 1856 the first electric telegraph in the city and gas lighting appeared, in 1864 the railway was inaugurated and 11 years later the railway bridge over the Mondego River was born. .
With the University as an unsurpassable reference, student movements arise from a political, cultural and social nature. From the University emerged and are still in full swing today the first Academic Orfeon of Coimbra in 1880, the oldest choir in the country, the Academic Association of Coimbra itself, in 1887, the Academic Tuna of the University of Coimbra in 1888.
