The "Unhas Negras" Monument, located in São João da Madeira, is a symbol of the Headgear Industry and a fair tribute to the "poor hatters." The name "Unhas Negras", the title of the novel by João da Silva Correia, who worked on the fulas and kept their nails tinted black. The nickname came to be generalized and was, for a long time, used to designate the inhabitants of S. João da Madeira.
