The Fort St. Joseph is located in Porto Santo. It was built during Pombal's consulate to defend the harbor of the village. During the occupation of 1801 and 1807, its dependencies, served as headquarters for British troops and were later used as a prison.
The fort has undergone several changes over the centuries.
Today is one of the tourist attractions of the island, and is furnished with eight old iron artillery pieces, disassembled.
